Most of the time we don't have a problem growing our hair, but in fact we have a problem retaining the hair that we grow!
If you break off more hair then you actually grow, then it's going to look like there's a growth problem. Hair naturally sheds from the root, so when you see small pieces of hair on your pillow or wherever you brush your hair, those small pieces actually represent breakage!
- HOW TO PREVENT BREAKAGE WHEN SHAMPOOING THE HAIR.
Shed hair is natural and broken hair can be a bit problematic if it happens too frequently. One of the best times to analyze the difference between shed hair and broken hair is when detangling.
With that being said, having the proper routine when managing the hair is very important, especially when cleansing the hair.
Most of the breakage that many of us encounter believe it or not is during wash day. It may not seem necessary, but thoroughly detangling the hair before attempting to shampoo is critical.
STEPS TO DETANGLING THE HAIR BEFORE SHAMPOOING.
1. CHOOSE A DETANGLING CONDITIONER WITH LOTS OF SLIP.
2. SECTION THE HAIR IN AT LEAST 4 TO 6 SECTIONS AND HOLD WITH CLAMPS.
3. THOROUGLY WET THE FIRST SECTION OF HAIR WITH WARM WATER.
ONE OF THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAYS TO DETANGLE KINKY, COILY, OR CURLY HAIR IS FINGER DETANGLNG. IT IS IMPORTANT TO DETANGLE FROM THE TIP (WITH THE FINGERS) UP TO THE ROOT AND APPLY EXTRA CONDITIONER ALONG WITH WARM WATER TO KEEP THE HAIR SUBLTE AND MOIST. TAKING THE PROPER TIME WITH THIS METHOD WILL DECREASE SINGLE STRAND KNOTS IN THE HAIR, WHICH WILL SOMETIMES CAUSE LARGE SECTIONS OF HAIR TO BE LOST IN THE PROCESS OF DETANGLING, OR COMBING.
5. FINGER DETANGLE EACH SECTION OF THE HAIR AND COMPLETE WITH A TWIST TO SECTION IT OFF AND MOVE TO THE NEXT SECTION.
6. SHAMPOO SECTION BY SECTION STARTING AT THE SCALP AND MOVING THE FINGERS DOWN THE SHAFT. WHEN CLEANSING THE HAIR ALWAYS USE A GENTLE SHAMPOO THAT WILL NOT STRIP THE HAIR OF ITS NATURAL OILS LIKE OUR HIBISCUS KISS BLACK SOAP SHAMPOO. AS YOU CLEANSE YOUR HAIR, BE SURE TO MOVE THE HANDS IN A DOWNWARD MOTION DOWN THE SHAFT OF THE HAIR IN ORDER TO FLATTEN THE CUTICLE. AS WE FOLLOW THESE STEPS WHILE CLEANSING THE HAIR IN SECTIONS, WE PREVENT INTRODUCING TANGLES TO YOUR CROWN.
7. AS YOU PROCEED TO CONDITION THE HAIR, APPLY THE CONDITIONER BEGINNING AT THE ROOT. MOVE SECTION BY SECTION AS YOU APPLY THE CONDITIONER MOVING THE HANDS IN A DOWNWARD MOTION. WHEN COMPLETELEY FINISHED, RINSE THE HAIR THOROUGHLY (KEEPING IT SECTIONED), THEN PROCEED TO DRYING OR STYLING AS USUAL.
